Dog perceive their world through their noses first and eyes second. Scent Work takes this innate skill and creates ways for dogs of any age, size, or physical ability to find the odor.
Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six mil-lion in a human nose. The dog's ability to analyzing smells is about 40 times greater than yours.
Dogs possess a sense of smell significantly more sensitive than even the most advanced man-made instruments. Their sense of smell can detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion. That's a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. Dogs are hard wired to be attracted to new and interesting odors and love to investigate smells. That leads to lots of important and fun things to do with your dog.
Law enforcement and the military use dogs to sniff out bombs and drugs, pursue suspects, and find people. Dogs are used to locate termites in buildings and detect human diseases like cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, and malaria just from smell alone.
Your dog can easily be taught to find missing items like your car keys, phone or check book. Your dog can be taught to find a lost child in the wilderness, follow a scent trail to figure out what you touched last or locate a critter hiding in a box amid the shelves in your garage.
Scent classes offer multiple ways to let your dog use that nose and challenge his mind. Scent work builds confidence, teaches focus, teamwork and strengthens the dog-human bond. Scent Work Venues and Classes Offered
NOSE WORK
Nose work is the best known of the "sniff" sports. In all nose work venues, dogs seek odors like anise, birch or clove that are hidden in boxes, inside buildings, on vehicles or under sand or water. There are two nose work sanctioning organizations:
The American Kennel Club (AKC) and the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). There a trials in both venues throughout northern California and Nevada.
BEGINNING NOSE WORK:
This class is for dogs that are new to the sport and need to learn basic hunting skills and scent discrimination. Handlers learn the rules of the game for the two major sanctioning entities (AKC and NACSW), how to read their dog's body postures and how to know when the dog has located the scent. Beginning and Intermediate dogs work together. This allows the dogs to move up more quickly. The class is open to dogs of any age. 6-weeks $150

INTERMEDIATE NOSE WORK: This class is for dog-handler teams that have basic hunting skills, have started on odor and need to strengthen hunting skills as they prepare to compete in one of the sanctioning organizations. For teams preparing to show in NACSW, dogs should be prepared to pass the Odor Recognition Test (ORT) upon successful completion of the course. Intermediate and Beginning dogs work together. The class is open to dogs of any age. 6-weeks $150

ADVANCED NOSE WORK: This class is for the dog handler teams who are ready to compete. Class is highly individualized and focuses on more difficult hides, multiple, and blind hides and searching in all six elements: container, interior, exterior, vehicles, buried and water. Class Fee: $25/class paid monthly
